The joy of Piccalilli is the opportunity to grow so many of the flowers I love, from the old stand-bys to the new and unusual, and to share them with you. They are grown without chemicals, using compost made here on the farm, and manure sourced from neighbors. Designs can be elegant or country chic, but they are always natural, garden-inspired and gorgeous.

The Story

It started in the seventies, canning tomatoes, beans and beets with my mother and grandmother... The satisfaction and beauty of a tabletop covered with cooling Mason jars, filled with the colorful fruits of our labors...

Then, an eighth grade science project, in which I studied the effects of various liquids on seedlings: Coca Cola, orange juice, salt water, etc. The take-away was not the science, but rather the magic of watching those seeds sprout in their Dixie cups...
After college, a stint at an organic vegetable farm in Virginia, whose owners are some of the founders of the DC farmer's market scene, and later, at a flower farm in Carroll County, where I learned the tricks of the trade I am still using today...

In the mountains of Westen Maryland, my grandmother and her sisters would make a relish called Piccalilli, using whatever odds and ends could be found in the garden. From a basket of green tomatoes, undersized carrots or onions, side shoots of cauliflower, came colorful jars to grace the table all winter.

Using the seaonal offerings of the garden is the essence of Piccalilli, creating the continuously changing patchwork of posies that grace our tables, delectable and soul-nourishing...home-grown and hand-crafted, bouquet after bouquet... The flowers we relish. It doesn't get much better than that.
